Appointed partner at just 33, Competition partner Bradley Aburn plays a key role in leading Russell McVeagh’s market-leading Competition team. Brad reflects on the transition into partnership and the influence that comes with it.
What kind of law work are you involved in?
I specialise in competition law, helping clients navigate the complexities of this fast-moving area with clarity and confidence. This work covers a wide range of matters, from mergers and acquisitions, Commerce Commission investigations and market studies, to joint ventures and competitor collaborations, competition compliance frameworks and broader regulatory issues.
I most enjoy working closely alongside clients to find practical, commercially sound ways to achieve their goals in a compliant manner. It is especially rewarding to be able to make the law more accessible and turn complicated challenges into clear, workable solutions.
What were the reasons you were appointed partner?
I was appointed partner to help lead Russell McVeagh's market-leading competition team. It’s an exciting time to be a competition lawyer with the scope of New Zealand’s competition law having evolved significantly. Recent developments include the expansion of the cartel prohibition, the criminalisation of cartel conduct, the introduction of market studies and changes to the misuse of market power prohibition.
Alongside this, we’re seeing a more active Commerce Commission and a growing awareness of competition issues across the media and political spheres. These shifts are bringing new challenges and opportunities for clients.
Before returning to Russell McVeagh, I spent over five years practising in Europe, advising on the full spectrum of European competition law. This international experience gives me a unique perspective on New Zealand’s developing regime and can offer valuable guidance, especially when there is often a lack of domestic precedent.
What are the main benefits and challenges of being a partner?
I enjoy being at the forefront of thought leadership, contributing to how competition law evolves and helping to shape the development of the next generation of competition law in this country. At the same time, I am also passionate about leading our team and mentoring the next generation of competition lawyers, fostering talent, curiosity, and a deep understanding of this dynamic area of law.
