Tom is a talented corporate finance and debt capital markets lawyer with extensive experience acting for both banks and borrowers in New Zealand and overseas.

He has a unique ability to understand his clients’ business objectives and manages transactions to ensure those objectives are met in the most efficient way possible. Tom has acted on some of New Zealand’s largest and most complex corporate finance and debt capital markets transactions and has consistently delivered results on those transactions. 

Tom has extensive experience advising his client base of banks, corporates and other financial market participants on all aspects of financial services regulation. He is regarded as a leading expert on the AML/CFT Act and also has particular expertise in relation to financial adviser legislation and all aspects of the prudential regulation of banks and insurers.


Tom has over 10 years of experience gained in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom advising major banks, corporates and insurance companies. His recent experience includes:

  • Acting for Credit Suisse as arranger and the related banking syndicates on various secured credit facilities provided to Graeme Hart's Rank Group (including the Carter Holt Harvey, Reynolds and Autoparts groups).
  • Acting for WEL Networks Limited, Meridian Energy and Spark New Zealand on corporate finance facilities.
  • Acting for Meridian Energy, Infratil Limited and Spark New Zealand on listed bond issuances under the Financial Markets Conduct Act.
  • Acting for ANZ on the sale of UDC Finance in 2017.
  • Acting for a major New Zealand insurer on regulatory matters including submissions on the proposed reform of the Financial Advisers Act and the application of the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Act.
  • Advising financial institutions and corporates on regulatory issues including issues relating to the AML/CFT Act, RBNZ banking standards, the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act and the application of the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Act.
  • Acting for New Zealand Local Government Funding Agency on the compliance listing of NZ$5.5 billion of bonds.
  • Advising ANZBGL on the New Zealand aspects of the sale of Origin’s home loan book.
  • Acting for Beijing Capital Group on its acquisition of Waste Management NZ, including assisting with the due diligence process and advising on the credit facility funding the acquisition.
  • Advising Meridian Energy on its IPO in 2013.
  • Advising Scottish Pacific on its 2016 securitisation with Westpac.

Tom is the National Chair of the firm's Innovation Committee and he has previously been a Russell McVeagh board member. 

He began his career with Russell McVeagh in 2005 and returned to the firm in 2012 after working for three years as an Associate in the debt capital markets team at Maples and Calder in London.

Tom is on the team which won 'International Deal of the Year' at the 2019 New Zealand Law Awards.

Tom is co-author of the New Zealand chapter in The Insurance and Reinsurance Law Review and the New Zealand chapter within The Law Review's Virtual Currency Regulation Review. He is listed as a top lawyer for Capital Markets Law and Banking and Finance Law by Best Lawyers® 2020 New Zealand guide.
