Sam is a business and commercial property law specialist based in our Queenstown office, with expertise spanning a range of industry sectors and client types.
He works closely with his clients to deliver clear and unambiguous advice to help them execute strategy and achieve outcomes. This value-add approach has seen Sam become a trusted and repeat advisor to many of his clients.
Before joining Russell McVeagh, Sam established and led the Queenstown office of another New Zealand law firm, where he was partner for 15 years.



Sam provides expert advice to his clients on a wide range of matters, including on the purchasing and selling of property and businesses, commercial leasing, land development and subdivision, business structuring, overseas investment, rural and forestry law and succession planning.
Sam’s clients include small to large listed and unlisted companies, high net worth individuals and families, multi-generational business, farm and forestry owning entities and families and offshore investors into New Zealand.
Sam's experience of working across a range of sectors and clients has seen him develop specialist expertise in several areas, including:
- advising a number of Queenstown's large tourism operators in relation to their commercial requirements and operations on public and private land, which involves securing permissions from relevant Crown agencies to undertake commercial operations on conservation and other Crown owned land.
- advising offshore individuals and entities on New Zealand's overseas investment regime and has successfully obtained consents for offshore investors to acquire sensitive New Zealand land, forestry and other assets. These engagements often extend to asisting offshore clients with multiple acquisitions and providing a wider scope of legal advice and support to those client's wishing to become resident in New Zealand.
- regularly working with families to design and execute succession outcomes for businesses and farms. This experience has seen him develop bespoke solutions that respond to individual family requirements to achieve succession outcomes.
Sam is also a current director of NZ Forestry Partnership and a Member of the Board of Trustees for Te Atamira.
