Russell McVeagh has advised Helios Energy Limited on securing resource consents for two large-scale solar energy projects in New Zealand.
Together, the Māniatoto Plain and Ongaonga solar farms span both the North and South Islands, reflecting the breadth of Helios’ renewable energy development. These projects will add 400MWac of renewable generation capacity, supporting New Zealand’s transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
The Māniatoto Plain Solar Farm, located in Central Otago, will deliver 300MWac of renewable energy, span 665 hectares and feature over 550,000 solar panels. The project will power the equivalent of 70,000 homes annually and includes a $450 million investment in the region.
The Ongaonga Solar Farm, located in Central Hawke’s Bay, has been developed in partnership with three local farming families. It will generate 100MWac of renewable energy, power around 29,000 homes each year and represents a $150 million investment in the region.
Our team, led by Partner Daniel Minhinnick, and supported by Louise Espin and Eve Boister, worked closely with Helios throughout the consenting process, including managing contested hearings and providing strategic advice on environmental and planning matters.
“These projects reflect the scale and ambition of New Zealand’s renewable energy pipeline. We’re proud to support Helios in delivering infrastructure that will help power thousands of homes and contribute to our national decarbonisation goals.”
