Hear from our people

Jack Watson, Law Clerk

Our team provides specialised tax advice on all types of direct and indirect tax, meaning team members have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of matters. The team regularly advises on the tax implications of financing and capital raising transactions, mergers and acquisitions, business establishment and reorganisations, investment products, Public Private Partnerships (aka PPPs), employee remuneration packages, customs and excise, transfer pricing and disputes.

Our clients range from large multi-national corporates to local in-house legal/tax teams and high-net worth individuals. The team also regularly advises investment funds, businesses and individuals looking to invest in New Zealand or move into the New Zealand market for the first time.

As a junior in our Tax team, you will often be assisting in the provision of advice, as well as researching a diverse range of tax issues and drafting tax related provisions. The team is smaller than most practice groups at Russell McVeagh and is tight-knit and supportive. Analytical thinkers who possess a keen eye for detail and a love for problem solving are likely to enjoy being in the Tax team.

The vast majority of commercial law papers offered at University will be useful in building a strong foundation for a career in tax, however, those that are more tax specific will be most beneficial.
