Mike specialises in environmental and resource management litigation, and advising clients on major development projects. He has particular experience providing advice on infrastructure, industrial, residential and coastal projects, as well as complicated district and regional planning matters.

Mike also specialises in local government and public law issues, including liquor licensing and alcohol policy under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.


Mike appears before councils and Courts on a range of matters and is experienced in dealing with regulators in the environmental and local government space. Recent experience includes:

  • Defending resource consents on appeal to the Environment Court for SkyPath, the proposed walking and cycling pathway across the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
  • Assisting Watercare to obtain resource consents for upgrades to three wastewater treatment plants to service anticipated growth in Auckland.
  • Advising Fonterra on reverse sensitivity issues, including as part of plan review processes, development proposals and submissions in opposition to proposals to develop sensitive activities nearby.
  • Advising on the development of the Weiti Precinct, comprising 860 ha of greenfields land in Auckland, including an initial 150 lot subdivision.
  • Advising Ports of Auckland and Bayswater Marina, including through the development of the Auckland Unitary Plan.
  • Obtaining liquor licences for Progressive Enterprises and Lion, including successfully appealing a decision of the Wellington District Licensing Committee.

Mike began his career at Russell McVeagh in 2013 and was admitted to practise that same year. He was promoted to Senior Solicitor in 2016 and then to Senior Associate in 2017.

He is a member of the Auckland Branch Committee of the Resource Management Law Association (2016 – present), and frequently contributes case law updates to the Association's newsletters and journal. Mike also contributes to the Coastal and Marine Pollution chapters of the leading New Zealand environmental textbook Environmental and Resource Management Law in New Zealand (5th Ed).

Mike has also been listed as a Rising Star in Planning and Environment Law by Doyles Guide 2018.
