Russell McVeagh senior associates Isaac Manase, Lauren Rapley and Matt Consedine have today been named 'Rising Stars' of New Zealand's legal industry.

NZ Lawyer's 2022 Rising Stars list boasts the country's brightest emerging talent in the industry. This year's list features three senior Russell McVeagh lawyers who all began their careers with the firm and have since gone on to demonstrate leadership and achievement in the legal profession.

Meet our Rising Stars:

Isaac Manase

Isaac Manase is a highly respected lawyer in Russell McVeagh's market-leading Corporate Advisory practice with extensive experience advising on mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, overseas investment, joint ventures and a broad range of general corporate matters for significant and high-profile businesses.

Starting his legal career at Russell McVeagh as a graduate in 2012, Isaac returned to the firm in 2021 after four years working in London for Slaughter and May where he advised on several high-profile cross-border and domestic transactions. He has made an impressive impact since returning to New Zealand and been heavily involved in a number of significant transactions in the last 12 months.

Corporate Advisory Practice Group Chair, David Hoare says, "Isaac has rolled up his sleeves and generally got stuck into all aspects of life at the firm – his technical work is extremely high quality, he spends a lot of time mentoring junior staff, and he is running a number of complex transactions. But the stand-out thing, and the attribute that will see Isaac rise to the top of the profession, remains his positive attitude."

Lauren Rapley

As a key member of Russell McVeagh's Environmental, Planning and Natural Resources team, Lauren joined the firm as a law clerk in 2014 and was promoted to Senior Associate in 2019.  She advises on all aspects of resource management and environmental law, with significant experience advising on large-scale development and infrastructure projects of regional and national significance.

Lauren is a trusted advisor to a number of the firm's major clients and has been instrumental in advising our clients on a range of complex projects in the past 12 months. She is committed to delivering exceptional service and high-quality outcomes for her clients.

Russell McVeagh Board Chair Allison Arthur-Young and partner in the Environmental, Planning and Natural Resources team says that Lauren's personal qualities make her a real leader and that she is a team player who team members look up to and model themselves on.

"Lauren is smart, strategic, and thoughtful, and works hard to achieve excellent results. She is innovative in her thinking, and is always looking for ways to deliver advice and service in better way. She is not afraid to test novel approaches, or to question the status quo. She leans into new (often challenging) opportunities which stretch her and those around her," she says.

Matt Consedine

Matt is a valued member of Russell McVeagh's Banking and Finance team. He has significant experience advising financial institutions, non-bank/direct lenders, sponsors and corporates on a wide range of market-leading cross-border financing transactions, including acquisition finance (across the credit spectrum and including public takeovers), corporate finance, restructurings and margin lending. He also provides advice on financial services regulation and advises issuers on debt capital markets issuances.

Matt began his career at Russell McVeagh in 2013. He then worked at Linklaters LLP in London for four years as an Associate and Managing Associate before returning to Russell McVeagh last year.

Partner David Weavers says, "Matt has worked alongside me on a number of high-profile and complex transactions. He rises to the challenge every time and embraces detail and working through difficult legal issues – all of which are critical to success in the area in which we practice. In addition to being an outstanding lawyer, Matt lives our firm's values and is a very supportive team member and mentor for our juniors."
