Russell McVeagh partner Troy Pilkington has been honoured for his outstanding work and client service by being recognised as the exclusive 2019 International Law Office Client Choice Award winner for Competition/Antitrust in New Zealand.

The prestigious awards recognise partners throughout the globe that stand apart for excellence in client service, in particular the ability to add real value to clients’ business above and beyond others in the market. Uniquely, the nominations and recommendations for these awards can be made by clients only, with the results based on a survey of senior in-house counsel.

Corporate counsel who participated in the survey particularly acknowledged:

  • "His knowledge and expertise are exceptional; he can communicate complex concepts clearly to lawyers and commercial colleagues alike."
  • "Troy is a highly-valued advisor and is like an extension of the business; he is always willing to take steps to add additional value."
  • "He is a responsive, diligent and pragmatic lawyer; he provides top-notch legal advice."
  • "He can get to the heart of an issue and touch on all the key aspects."

Troy regularly advises clients on the full range of competition/antitrust law issues, including merger control issues, joint venture advice, cartel investigations and prosecutions, and market power investigations and prosecutions. Troy appeared before the High Court in the NZME/Fairfax merger appeal, and has represented clients in a significant number of Commerce Commission merger approval processes. He is a board member of the Competition Law and Policy Institute of New Zealand, listed as a leading practitioner in New Zealand Competition/Antitrust by Chambers and Partners, and recognised as a 'Future Leader' of the industry by Who's Who Legal.

The broader Russell McVeagh Competition/Antitrust team also continues to go from strength-to-strength, with Senior Solicitor Bradley Aburn recently re-joining the team following five years with Slaughter & May in Europe and Senior Solicitor Sam Holmes completing a Masters of Competition Law from the University of Melbourne. Russell McVeagh's team is recognised with 'Band 1' rankings in New Zealand by both Chambers and Legal 500 for Competition/Antitrust, has been awarded 'Elite' status by the Global Competition Review (GCR), and has recently been shortlisted as a finalist for 'Regional Firm of the Year – Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa' in the GCR's 2019 Awards (with the winner to be announced in Washington DC in March).

Litigation partner Sarah Armstrong and Corporate partner David Hoare were also recognised with ILO Client Choice wins, for the fourth and third time respectively, at this year's awards.
