Job Description

Russell McVeagh is New Zealand's premier law firm committed to operating at the cutting edge of legal practice. Our award-winning team of lawyers across Auckland | Tāmaki Makaurau and Wellington | Te Whanganui-a-Tara are internationally recognised for their thought leadership, depth of experience and ability to translate complex legal issues into client success stories.

Our values of Respect | Manaaki, Curiosity | Māhirahira, Excellence | Whai hiranga and Tenacity |Whakapau kaha reflect who we are and how we work together.

About the role

We are looking for a talented Senior Solicitor/Senior Associate with competition and/or public law and regulation experience to join our growing Auckland-based team in the firm's Government, Competition and Regulation practice.

The team is highly regarded as pre-eminent in the fields of competition law, regulation, law reform and government relations in New Zealand. We amalgamated these specialist areas into a newly formed practice group earlier this year to respond to client demand for coordinated expertise across these increasingly interrelated specialisms. The single platform provides a greater opportunity for collaboration and coordination that benefits not only our clients but also increases the work satisfaction of our people.

This is an excellent opportunity to be a key part of the growth and expansion of the team led by Auckland Partners Troy Pilkington, Craig Shrive, Petra Carey, and Bradley Aburn and Wellington Partner Tim Clarke. The team's work is diverse and some of the most challenging and complex in the market. You will have the opportunity to work across different specialities and industries, giving you great exposure and variety, but with the option to specialise in your chosen field if that is your preference.

The team works from our centrally-located open-plan Auckland offices, but we recognise that flexibility is important, so team members are able to work remotely from time to time to accommodate their other commitments or circumstances. We are open to discussing more formal flexible working arrangements for the right candidate, whether it be location or hours (including part-time options).

About you

If you are looking for an opportunity to work within a supportive, ambitious, growing and energetic team and would like to join an award-winning full-service firm, we would like to hear from you.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience in competition law and/or public law and regulation (or a related field)
  • Be seeking opportunities to work on challenging and complex matters across a range of industries
  • Be intelligent, diligent and curious
  • Strong academic track record
  • Relish the chance to take the lead on matters and help train and support the more junior lawyers in the team
  • A great attitude and desire to learn in a high-performing but collaborative and supportive environment.

There is also significant scope to participate and drive forward business development opportunities if this is exciting to you.

Benefits

We offer a wide range of employee benefits focused on supporting our people to succeed and thrive.  Some of these include;

  • Competitive remuneration package;
  • Support, coaching, and considered training and development programmes;
  • Annual wellness subsidy, phone allowance, and talent referral bonus incentives; and
  • Team charity days, sports days, annual ball, and regular team events.
