Expertise

Our team has the dedicated expertise that high-profile media matters require. We have experience in specialist media law issues including defamation, broadcasting and advertising standards, privacy, broadcaster joint ventures, content rights acquisitions, copyright and intellectual property.

We act for some of New Zealand’s leading media organisations, and our clients include individuals, major broadcasters and production companies. As well as representing our media clients in negotiations or court proceedings, we often provide strategic advice on media law issues both pre- and post-production.

Experience

Our experience includes advising:

  • TVWorks on its successful judicial review of a procedural determination of the Broadcasting Standards Authority.
  • Completing a pre-production review of the scripts and episode cuts of a major New Zealand television production and advising on defamation, copyright and broadcasting standards issues.
  • MediaWorks, TVNZ and Māori Television in relation to the joint acquisition of the free-to-air broadcast rights for Rugby World Cup 2011 and the joint sale of sponsorship advertising packages.
  • Providing strategic advice to clients on threatened defamation proceedings.
  • Advertisers in relation to Advertising Standards Authority complaints.
  • Broadcasters in relation to Commerce Commission investigations.
  • On media applications to access court files in ongoing proceedings.
