Pat acts for a number of large commercial and government organisations on their commercial legal work. His clients span a broad range of industries including dairy, electricity, rail, forestry, gas, pipfruit, petroleum and shipping. Pat joined Russell McVeagh as a partner in 1984, bringing with him a wealth of corporate and commercial experience. Prior to joining he had practised in London and New Zealand, and had been General Counsel for Mobil Oil.

- Acting for Meridian Energy Limited on the purchase of Whispertech / Whispergen / NZ / Spain / UK Heat Exchanger Development Company.
- Advising the MetService on a joint venture with the National Institute of Water and Air.
- Advising on the structure and documentation of several large joint venture and project finance transactions including co-generation, refining, oil terminal, shipping lines, power stations, wind farms, geothermal and port developments.
- Advising Auckland International Airport in relation to pricing issues.
- Advising the New Zealand Lotteries Commission on governance and public law issues.
- Advising AEPB (now Vector) and Capital Power on transition and implementation of post-corporatisation structures.
- Advising Unison Network Hawkes Bay on Treaty and consultation issues relating to windfarm development and corporations of contracting division.
- Providing ongoing advice to Meridian Energy on commercial and regulatory matters.
- Advising Huntly IDG when it was corporatised out of the old ECNZ and became Genesis.
- Advising on the Dairy Industry restructure, and providing governance and regulatory advice to Fonterra.
- Advising Treasury on commercial law and Commerce Act aspects of the Crown's gas interests and its commercial investments resulting from gas industry restructure.
- Advising Te Ohu Kai Moana on statutory compliance and stakeholder interests.
- Advising the New Zealand Maori Council on negotiations in relation to the basis of the establishment of Maori television.
- Advising Ngapuhi on commercial law advice on fisheries mandating.
- Advising Tainui commercial and governance advisor for Te Kauhanganui.
- Advising Te Puni Kokiri on the potential Maori Entities Bill.
- Advising on policy and commercial law issues to be resolved in the enactment of a Maori Corporations Act.
